I have a 1971 Elan with a single 250cc that I am able to start but backfires extensively when I press the accelerator. I am using a 50:1 gas mix and also tried a 32:1 mix. Any ideas where to start?

Did you clean your points yet on the old elan? sounds like it might be a bad condensor possible... or could even be simply a bad plug? or coil? i would also check the key ignition harness wire.. Make sure the back is plugged in proper not half plug in ect/.. take it off and replug it in.. look for any broken ground wires,, Do you have a working tether switch on the sled? does it function proper? do you have another coil to test or compair? never over look the plug wires..or better yet the boot!
One other thing to check is your timing it maybe out slightly of wack.. when cleaning your points look at the flywheel key make sure it looks ok and check the advance mechanism on your the fly wheel.. make sure it moves properly..
best i can do start with the easiest things first
i know this seems like a alot .. but you will narrow it down..

Data yikes thanks man for your post but thats alot of info dont scare him off lol joking unless your trying to buy the sled off him GIZZCAST ---> first thing i would do is this simply unplug the ignition carefully.. And see if you have the same problem if it does the same you know your problem is then not in the wiring,, and in the points and magneto area ....if so i would say pull the fly wheel and clean them points! best of luck let us know what happens.. Or if anyone else can chime in please do so..

Thanks guys. I had a new spark plug but I'm not sure if it's the right one. I will look at your other suggestions. Will keep you posted.

get a timing light on it while running if the marks stay steady and smooth everything is good with the points and coil IF they move all over the place, change the condenser. A known good condenser is better than a new one let me know gary

I have the same type of sled and also experienced the backfiring problem. Swapped out the old plug wire for a new one and adjusted the carb a bit and now it runs just fine. Sometimes will still backfire when its warming up but after a few minutes there's no problem. Id suggest changing the plug wire before you get too crazy.

Also a cheap fix thats is over looked is the spark PLUG boot i dont know how many NGK boots i had that crap out on me,, yep that small thing caused a Wack of trouble many times. ..If you have another spark plug boot around switch it out see if it runs better....
