Hi board what im about to tell is a tale of truly amazing bad sled luck and some luck i suppose.
I bought a Old 1978 Ski-doo Olympique for a song and for that price i had to clean it up abit and tune it up.
So i drained the tank put new lines on and cleaned carb ect the normal stuff.
After doing all that i sprayed some fuel in the carb and pulled it over.
It fired right away and it ran for a second or two.
I watched the gas in lines travel to the carb finally after another shot of prime.
The carb was loading up with fuel proper. I gave it a few more pulls and it started up but seemed only
to run on one cylinder, After trying to keep it running by reving the hell out of it i noticed at higher rpm
the motor would kick in and run on two cylinders!
But if let off on the gas it would only run on one at lower speed or idle.
So i pulled out the motor from the body to get at the points!
I figured i should clean the points and regap them maybe they were just dirty causing it to run on one cylinder..
When i pulled the flywheel i noticed a small amount of oil at the bottom of the mag plate in the starter cup housing
where was this oil coming from ?
I suspected the mag side crank seal..So what turned out to be cleaning the points
IS now changed to doing the cranks seal and while im doing one side
why not just do the other side too! Ordered New crank seals very cheap really so i thought
what the hell why not a new set of rings too? So Ordered them into!
When taking it all apart i pulled the carb manifold so i could deglaze the cylinders for the new rings..
i noticed one side of the carb manifold was not sealing proper! That was the problem all along!
It would not get proper fuel at lower rpm and probly leaned out that side abit
so i want to check out the piston on that side..
When looking at the cylinder i noticed a strong crosshatch pattern from a hone still quite visible!
IT was recently rebuilt and probly not really even broken in yet!
So Wow i then looked at the piston it had alot of carbon on top of piston
so i cleaned it up and cleaned up the ring grooves lots of carbon in there to
i think from the previous owner running the motor like that with one leaking Black square manifold gasket for sometime.!
So no need for the for the rings i guess i will keep em for another time or another motor. ...
Ok i put the new seals in then made two manifold new gaskets
I resealed the engine with crankcase sealant torqued everything up.
I put the motor back in primed it up and pulled it over it ran on the prime for a second then i ran outta of gas lol
I just cant win I Cant find my dang gas can to even get gas to try it out !
