heres a interesting thread on if You need to split the crankcase or not on when replacing a crank seal on a Rotax 247 and 299 snowmobile motor.. by placing the the crank in the freezer for awhile makes changing the crank bearings way easier if you need to.. and also by warming up the two crankshaft housings it will go back together alot easier.. Some guys do not split the crank case housing and pound them in from the outside after the clutch and magneto are removed .. I would say alot of seals are wasted that way,, However it will save time and seals are not that expensive.. its up to you.. but if you do want to do it by splitting the crank you will need to have install new gaskets aswell..
