Hi i have question has anyone here ever fixed a cracked sled fuel tank before? I notice on the very top of my old skidoo olympique tank it has about a three inch crack near the filler spout in half moon shape.. It sometimes leaks if i fill it up to much right to the top...So i would like to fix it... I seen and read somewhere you can simply solder it with a electrical soldering iron? Or is that all bull?
Would like to try and do that and hate to have to spit out bucks and buy a new tank for the old girl ,, if that is even possible>?
any advise would sure be welcomed!
thankyou
Tim

I have had some success repairing plastic fuel tanks. I use a soldering iron, pushing existing plastic beside the crack into the crack. Plastic welding takes a little practice. After I test the repair with water. Once I know the leak is repaired I rough up the area with 80 grit sandpaper and use a special 2-part epoxy glue same stuff for bonding auto panels on cars on the area to reinforce the repair. Works very well when done correctly.

becareful never try welding or open flame fixing on fuel tanks ir they can blow up on ya.. You have to purge all tanks and vessels before welding.. MEANING YOU HAVE TO FILL IT WITH A NON EXPLOSIVE GAS..they fill FUEL TANKS WITH EXHAUST IN MOST SHOPS..YOU DONT WANT ANY AIR IN THE TANKS OR IT GOES KABOOM.. but if your using a Melting solder iron you should be safe,,, i would still rinse it out good before,,,,

Plastic welding is the only good way to fix them that I know of, if it is a 71 to 74 Oly good used tanks can be found at swaps pretty cheap.
