Starting to get ready for my fishing season again .So i went to the shed to see about my old 1968 6hp Johnson outboard trolling motor.. Last year it ran like top! First pull and it would idle and run like a timex and burn hardly any fuel!. So i put it in the rain barrel to test it... It started right up not bad at all! primed the bulb and pull on the cord..the way it went! BUT i did notice no water coming out of the water pump hole...So i shut it off fast,,Then i decided maybe i have to flush it out so i used the garden hose .. Some crud did flush out ,,Tryed it again still no water pumping... So i guess its time for a new water pump.. So i tryed taking off the the lower unit so i can install a new water pump..,, I had to fool with the gear shift in order to take the one bolt out of the gear shifter rod to let the lower unit come apart! But for some reason even after the shift rod bolt was taken out i still cant get the shaft out of the power head! But im having one hell of a time getting this old girl apart...So i was wondering would anyone here know why cant i get the lower unit off? Or better yet the drive shaft out of the crank??..I hope its not seized!

Jiggy thats not good to hear your having a hard time with the old Johnson.
I had a older 1970s 6hp Johnson before and i had simular trouble if you rotate the fly wheel abit back and forth it should unlock the roll pin at the top of the drive shaft below the crank,,\ Its hanging up on the housing right below the crank..
their is a bunch of stuff that holds up the crank seal ,,,Spring anf compression plates and oring.. try it jiggy dont pry on it to hard,, all that stuff in the housing has to spin with the drive shaft,,,

Thanks sledrat
Tryed it last to take the lower unit off last night for the hell of it, You were right on the money It dropped down and out after moving the fly wheel a lil! Thanks a bunch!!!! ! One other prob is now the top roll pin is bent all up,, i have wrecked the roll pin by trying to straighten it out!. I really like this little motor its been reliable for years! can i just make a new one from say a rusty old nail?

NO NO NO jiggy lol dont use a rusty old nail!~
Just get the right roll pin from a dealer.. I think they stainless they wont rust and are a certain size..
if your motor is 1968 it uses part number 303261
That should keep yer lil river rat motor goin for a while..
Best of luck sledrat...
