hi board i have a old Elan Skidoo its a single cylinder motor with a tillotson carb. It was running good just the other day but i did noticed near the end of my ride. It was starting to run funny...Acting like it was running out of gas barley made it home.. I went out to the shed and tryed starting it this morning to take it out for a ride and wont START! So i checked the gas it has lots of gas! I tryed everything to make itl run only when its primed will it run till it runs out of prime then it dies. But it will barley starts when the choke is on then dies wont stay running .. My dad fixed the carb about a month ago he put a new carb kit in it worked perfect after that. But Now it wont start! Anything im over looking or where to start its got me STUMPED ! great site here and thanks elankid

Hi elankid
It sounds like some problem with the fuel supply to your carb,, I would check for broken fuel lines maybe a plugged inline filter if your sled has one that is?.. Only thing i can think of.. When you prime it does run so that means no fuel to the carb,,, Or the carb or motor is not producing enough suction to bring the fuel to the carb..
A blockage perhaps?
Check the pick up line in the tank maybe is it cracked or not even in and under the fuel level?
*Oh one other thing that is very rare that happens sometimes and has caused me alot of grief before. Is THE white screw in fuel filter at the bottom of your tilly carb IT will sometimes vibrate loose from the vibration of the motor if its not tight enough.
**It needs to be tightened up after carb work has been done on your sled after a ride or two,,
THIS IS ALSO ANOTHER REASON TO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ALL YOUR FUEL LINE CONNECTIONS SECURED WITH ZIP TIES OR WIRE or with small hose clamps or fuel line spring clips .. . So it has a harder time loosening up.. AND NO AIR LEAKS!!
SO If that filter is not tight and not sealing proper that can make a sled run like crap or not run at all!..! It would be like adding a air leak to the system...
Let us know what it was...

hi Sledrat thanks for your help and guess what??? You hit the nail right on the head it was the filter at the bottom it was loose just like you said it could be!! I just tightened it up and it started second pull and idles great! I checked everything you mentioned first dang i could'nt get it to run at first.. Then i looked at the carb and i noticed abit of a wet spot under the carb dripping from the loose filter on to the tunnel below the carb! Should have picked up on that..
Bingo i could see the filter was loose! EASY FIX!
Way to go man thanks so much for your help im gonna ride this bugger now real good!
this Site rocks man!
forever grateful
