I have a 1974 440 tnt. New plugs, fuel lines, cleaned the tank, cleaned the carb including removing welch plugs. Before i did al, thos i could get it to run for a few secounds if i put fuel in the cylinders, now it will fire up and run but will not idle and bogs at hogh rpm. Ive messed with the high speed and the idle and it doesnt seem to get any better. Does anyone have any suggestions.

Hi well i would take the carb all apart make sure you blow it out with air real good also another question is before we get to crazy? What kind of carb rebuild kit did you use? or are you even using one or just cleaning the carb?
if so then i would suspect dryed up diaphram and sled with a tilly that has old diaphrams in the carb will not run proper.. ...So let us know what your doing type of carb and pic would be nice... I would also recommend a rebuild kit for your carb,,,anything is better than nothing but some kits are better.,..

Sled has a tillotson hd on it. The diaphram and gaskets looked really good. I got two sleds both with hd carbs. Both carbs looked like they had just been cleaned and rebuilt before they were parked, they sat for a few years. The 340 i blew the carb out replaced welch plugs and it runs awesome. Did they same procedure for the 440 but it has these running issues. The 340 has a needle thats captured with the little rocker and the 440 carb has the needle that just sits on the rocker. I thought this poorly designed needle might be part of the problem i noticed when i have the carb apart and hold it in the running position the needle likes to stick to the seat when you push the little rocker.

Ya but you say it runs but runs poorly correct at idle?.. Your carb will have a high and low circut of path the fuel travels through the carb which is adjust by the high and low needles. So the low needle should be the one that is being adjusted for idle or low rpms.. Just because one carb sits for same amount time doesnt mean the diaprams are not dryed up in it.. i would try a new kit in the carb on all the diaprhams dont skimp out change em all out even if they look good.... and yes if you can get the upgraded metering lever witht he kit hope fully with the forked type will solve alot of sticky needle problems in the future,,
Let us know how it goes.,..
